I remember all the struggles to get certain kinds of media to play in a Mac, and it was a real headache. Even today, some media players make you buy the most popular codecs before they will work properly. MPlayerX is an expression of why Macs are Macs - it just works. I'd give this app more than 5 stars if I could. No more REALPlayer, no more WindowsMedia, no more DIVX, and indeed, no more Quicktime Player either. I run ALL my A/V media through MPlayerX because it just works. No fuss, no muss, no headaches, no programming scripting or tweaking.
No arcane and arbitraty codecs to install or disable or whatever. Install, play media, enjoy. If you are frustrated with your A/V experience in MacOS, then get MPlayerX and kiss your A/V frustration goodbye! GunnyFreedom, Best media player for Mac OS hands down I have been Mac people since 1986.

GoldenBruceLeeroy, Nice, But A System Crasher I really, really want to love MPlayerX but too often the application would crash my entire system. I thought I’d found a workaround by first opening the app then using the File Open command to open the movie file. Just double-clicking on any.AVI,.MKV or any other video file would almost immediatley cause my entire system to just lock up.
The only thing that worked was my cursor. Everything else just stopped. I prefer MPlayer X because of the QuickTime like disappearing of the title bar and play controls compared to VLC. I also like being able to hit the arrow keys to go back and forward rather than having to always scroll. I had no choice but to uninstall the application.
Hopefully a future update will solve this ‘cause I really like this application. GoldenBruceLeeroy, Nice, But A System Crasher I really, really want to love MPlayerX but too often the application would crash my entire system.

Preview would play it, but not quicktime - it always asked for a codec update - Divx player is worthless, and did nothing for my codec update n Quicktime. MPEG Streamclip pro did not even recognize it, VLC was the best - it at least recognized it and played it but the audio cut out after 15 seconds. Online it was suggested to install Flip4MAc and Perian, two products with which I have had only limited success - and then in a corner of a thread it was suggested to try this app - Free? Great - DL'ed from app store and bingo the AVI plays without a hiccup. Not sure why it is not more well known, but It's now a standard part of my toolbox!
